Let some of the night stay dark

A note on editing shadow detail without losing the scene you photographed.

Decide what the shadow does

A dark foreground can give the sky a clear shape. Before lifting it, ask whether the photograph needs more detail there. If the silhouette is already readable, a brighter shadow may add noise without helping the composition.

Make one conservative edit and a second brighter version. Compare them at the size you intend to publish. Look at where your attention goes, rather than judging only how much information is visible.

Keep a reference

Save the original exposure beside your finished file. It is useful when you revisit the edit on another screen. Displays differ, and a late-night editing session can make an increasingly bright photograph feel normal. Return in daylight and compare the whole set before exporting.
